![]() That'd definitely involve rewriting a great deal of the game's graphics engine. In fact I'm pretty sure Super Mario Land is exactly that. Mario 1 levels are built internally with 16x16 tiles so I suppose in theory you could condense each tile into 8x8 size and build levels that way and just make all the sprites smaller by that same degree. GB native resolution: 160x144 (20x18 blocks) NES native resolution: 256x240 (32x30 blocks) What other awesome rom hacks have you seen over the years that have really impressed you or added a super crucial feature you always wanted in a game that the developers left out (like Seiken Densetsu 3 hack making it 3 players). One that there is a lot of garbage to sort though to find those amazing projects like the 30 different hacks of Streets of Rage 2 that add characters from other games with awful copy paste sprites or worse awful original sprites (don't look up hack for FF13 Lighting in the streets of rage series), and two the community seems to have a love of hard hacks when most people clearly have no sense of balance or don't realize they've made a hard hack trying to "rebalance" the game. If I had any real issue with rom hacks or the rom hacking community it's two fold. And finally the avgn brought up Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest Redacted in a video awhile back and his praise of how much it fixes Simon's Quest weren't unfounded. Final Fantasy 2/4 and Final Fantasy 3/6 hacks that change up the games story so that Golbez and Leo join your party in each game in a natural way with new gameplay and story content built around these changes. The sonic 1 and 2 hacks even have a built in save feature which is just wow.Ī few other rom hacks that have really stood out to me are Final Fantasy Tactics 1.3 a hard mod that changes every little element of FFT rebalances everything, makes the enemy ai smart, and adds new characters like Marche and the PSP exclusive classes as new characters. Sonic 3 and Knuckles has an insane rom hack simply called complete that has so many options it inspired me to make this topic since the amount of options to change up the gameplay inside the game is mind blowing. Sonic 2 has two different crazy rom hacks one Sonic Classic Heroes that lets you play with 3 characters at once (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles or Team Chaotix with their KC abilities intact) and play though both Sonic 1 and 2 in one mega game, the other Sonic 2 Delta reinserts the unfinished beta levels into the game finishing them. The Sonic community in particular has put out some amazing hacks including Sonic Mega Mix which lets you play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and Mighty each with unique gameplay mechanics and mechanics from later game like the light speed dash and allows you to play new stages or the classic Sonic 1 stages. I had of course heard of the few rom hacks that essentially made a brand new game out of old games like Zelda Parallel Worlds or Super Metroid Remodel but having spent the past few weeks really diving into all that's out there I continued to be blown away by how much effort fans put into stuff. ![]() So I've always known about rom hacking but for the most part I knew of it for simple things like fixing the lag in Final Fantasy Tactics WotL, translating games into English, bug patches, or hard hacks.
